Esports are growing rapidly and are now an integral part of many young people’s daily lives. In a new study, researchers from Jönköping University and the University of Agder argue that esports can also play a key role in the development of a more sustainable digital society – socially, economically and environmentally – and serve as a model for how the digital industry takes responsibility for societal challenges.

Esports are at a crucial stage and sustainability must become an integral part of the industry’s development, according to the researchers behind the study, Brian McCauley, Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Jönköping International Business School at Jönköping University, and Tobias Scholz from the University of Agder, Norway.

The study suggests that esports are at a critical turning point. Whilst the industry continues to grow rapidly, it also faces major challenges: persistent problems with online harassment, fragile business models and an environmental footprint that is often overlooked.

“It’s important that we make spaces for people to take their online friendships and communities offline. Annual LAN events such as Glitched, or the smaller EventLAN bring people together in the real world around gaming but it would be fantastic if cities provided a platform for gamers to socialize more around gaming all year round” says Brian McCauley.

At the same time, industry’s global reach and influence, particularly amongst young people, create unique opportunities to drive positive change.

“Esports is no longer a niche phenomenon. It is embedded in modern digital culture with significant influence, particularly among digital natives, and therefore it’s important that we make sure it’s a space that enhances how children and teenagers experience the digital society” says Brian McCauley.

Four key areas for action

The researchers highlight four key areas for action: building more inclusive and safe communities, developing sustainable and diverse revenue models, addressing environmental impact, and linking esports to broader societal challenges. Such as, for example, the development of artificial intelligence.

The study also points to the role of esports in an AI-driven world. As artificial intelligence reshapes education and work, esports can help develop human skills such as collaboration, communication and strategic thinking, skills that are difficult to automate. Overall, the findings position esports not only as a growing industry, but as a powerful arena for sustainable digital transformation.

Focus on AI

In 2022, the EU issued a decision on video games and esports that emphasized the potential of the context to build a better more united Europe. The researchers argue that the decision reinforces the study’s main argument that esports can contribute to a more sustainable digital society.

“With this decision, esports is formally recognized as an important cultural and economic sector with significant potential for innovation, skills development and societal impact. The EU noted how esports can build digital skills, creativity and teamwork, key competencies in an AI-driven society” says Brian McCauley.
