Call for papers
The conference GeM 2018 is being organized by the CCD research group (Communication, Culture and Diversity, www.ju.se/ccd) within its international conference series (Read more on CCD’s webpage).
GeM 2018 will constitute an occasion to map and explore genres and media landscapes on the move in a range of areas, aesthetic and representative genres, as well as pragmatic and communicative ones. Concerns of GeM 2018 include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- how genres are constructed, crossed and transformed in continuums,
- how people make use of them in every-day-life for different purposes,
- how the relationships between genres and media landscapes are being addressed (for instance which units of analysis are being deployed),
- which criteria, i.e. modes, text, sound, image, gestures, come into play in different genres and media, and
- how these are present, chained and intertwined.
GeM 2018 aims to create a multi-disciplinary platform that will bridge the gaps between different theoretical constructs regarding genres, as well as institutional usage and every-day practices in a media dense society. The conference will bring together scholars from the disciplines of Media Studies, Education, Arts and Humanities, including professionals from the sector of culture, with the aim of going beyond the polarized academic area of genre studies. It is in this manner that GeM 2018 will also go beyond issues that arose at the International 2013 Copenhagen Genre Conference and the forthcoming international 2018 Mumbai Mediamorphosis, Identity and Participation conference.
We welcome abstracts (max 500 words) of research/studies that are clearly related to the themes and aims of the conference and reflect a variety of genres within a range of disciplines from different parts of the world. The abstract should be structured using the following 5 headings: (i) a statement of the theoretical and methodological frameworks used, (ii) the empirical materials explored, (iii) the research questions focused upon, (iv) preliminary/final findings of the study, and (v) how the study relates to the theme of the conference.
Papers will be selected following criteria of excellence and novelty. In addition, dimensions related to gender equality, balance between junior and senior researchers, and cultural diversity among participants will be aimed for. Author/s of accepted abstracts will be expected to make available a full-length draft of their research/studies for discussion at the GeM 2018 conference (see deadlines below). Selected papers will be considered for publication in the open access research report series of the School of Education and Communication, Jönköping University.
Please submit your abstract by uploading your file here (deadline 15 April 2018): http://machform.hj.se/view.php?id=361527
