Marginalization Processes

The multidisciplinary research group CCD/KKOM (Communication, Culture and Diversity) at the School of HumES (Humanities, Education and Social Sciences), Örebro University, Sweden, invites abstracts for its eighth international research conference/workshop. The theme of Marginalization Processes that framed the October 2011 workshop will be focused again during 26-28 April 2012. The Marginalization Processes, MP 2012 workshop is supported by The Swedish Research Council. This activity builds upon a tradition of cross disciplinary exploratory research meetings organized by the group since the end of the 1990s

MP 2012: Theme, aims & description

The Marginalization Processes 2012 international multidisciplinary workshop aims at both (i) bringing together empirically framed sociohistorical and sociocultural research that focuses upon the communicatively oriented processes that marginalize children, young people and adults in different settings, and (ii) providing a forum for senior and junior researchers who despite being situated in different academic domains and disciplines find common ground because of an interest in issues of inclusion/exclusion, integration/segregation from social interactional and historical perspectives.

Aspects like the reach and quality of institutionalized support systems like schools, health services, security, etc in democratic societies are seen as central for human beings wellbeing and development. However the nature and relevance of opportunities that human beings have access to is a question that goes beyond issues of availability and provision. Focusing historical and present day marginalization processes that have influenced or currently influence opportunities which children, young people and/or adults have access to are therefore significant. Given the complexities that mark present day societies, for instance digital, social and cultural shifts and an increasing pace of change and diversification that interfaces at global, national and local levels, the MP 2012 international workshop has the following explicit aims:

• Enable a discussion of current research results from different perspectives and representing different domains/disciplines that build upon micro and/or historical studies of marginalization processes and how these may renew our understandings of institutionalized education, health care and other support systems.
• Provide a platform for discussing methodological and conceptual questions of relevance for marginalization processes in the light of local, regional and global changes, diversification and mobility across time and space.

In addition, keeping with the long term endeavor of building up collaboration with institutional partners like schools, health care, the public and voluntary sector, the CCD/KKOM research group explicitly aims to (in addition to establishing itself further on the international arena) further develop new trans-disciplinary research and new inter-sector networks that will provide an opportunity for theoretical and applied knowledge transfer across different sectors in Swedish society – academic, public, voluntary, etc. An activity to this end will be planned in connection with MP 2012.

Abstracts & full length drafts

We elicit abstracts (max 500 words) of research/studies that are clearly related to the themes and aims of the MP 2012 workshop (see also keywords). Empirical studies from different institutional settings will be accepted. The abstract should be structured using the following 5 headings (i) a statement of the theoretical and methodological frameworks used, (ii) the empirical materials explored, (iii) the research questions focused upon ,(iv) preliminary/final findings of the study, and (v) how the study being reported is related to MP 2012.

Author/s of accepted abstracts will be expected to make available a full length draft for discussion at the MP 2012 workshop(see Deadlines above). Selected papers will be considered for (i) a theme journal issue of an international peer-reviewed journal, and (ii) publication in a focused anthology with an international publisher.
