Maria Faresjö bestämde sig tidigt för att arbeta med forskning. Efter avslutad grundutbildning vid Hälsohögskolan i Jönköping flyttade Maria till Linköping och påbörjade 1995 sina doktorandstudier vid avdelningen för Pediatrik vid Linköpings universitet. Maria försvarade 2000 sin avhandling "The importance of cell-mediated immunity for the development of type 1 diabetes" för medicine doktorsexamen. Syftet med avhandlingen var att studera hur immunförsvaret ser ut hos den som lider stor risk att insjukna i typ 1-diabetes. Maria studerade också vad som händer med immunförsvaret då man väl insjuknat i typ 1-diabetes.
Maria fortsatte efter avlagd doktorsexamen att studera immunförsvaret med hjälp av en rad immunologiska och molekylärbiologiska tekniker i samarbete med bl a sina fyra doktorander. Studierna av immunförsvaret gjordes dels hos barn med typ 1-diabetes, dels hos barn med allergi och celiaki. I maj 2007 blev Maria docent i experimentell pediatrisk immunologi vid Hälsouniversitetet i Linköping.
Ett mycket viktigt projekt som Maria idag arbetar med försöker utröna om stress kan påverka vårt immunförsvar. Tillsammans med forskarkollegor vid Linköpings universitet vill de utröna om hög stress hos barn kan leda till en autoimmun process, vilken i värsta fall kan utvecklas till typ 1-diabetes. Projektet är finansierat av både Vetenskapsrådet och Forskningsrådet för arbetsliv och socialvetenskap.
Maria återvände till Hälsohögskolan vid årsskiftet 2009 och befordrades i maj till professor i biomedicinsk laboratorievetenskap. Hälften av sin tid arbetar Maria vid Laboratoriemedicin, Länssjukhuset Ryhov där hon har möjlighet att vidareutveckla sin forskningsprofil. Maria har sedan tidigare ett etablerat forskningssamarbete med barnkliniken på Ryhov med syfte att studera barnets immunförsvar vilket nu även kommer att ske i samarbete med Laboratoriemedicin. Maria ser med stor glädje fram emot att möta sina nya kollegor och att framöver få möjlighet att starta nya viktiga och spännande forskningsprojekt.
