Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a discipline that concerns with how humans use and are affected by information technologies, and to create solutions to problems that are both accessible and useful for in everyday life. As technologies are becoming increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous, almost every aspect in modern life involves the interaction with technologies in some way. Hence, this makes HCI a multi- and interdisciplinary field of study that draws on principles from different fields such as computer science, psychology, arts, and many more.

The HCI Lab at JU

The HCI Lab in the Department of Computer Science and Informatics at Jönköping University is an exciting environment in which research on human and technologies is conducted in the broadest sense. As an experience is created on different levels within a technology, the lab focuses on different touch-points that creates an experience to the user. This involves research on design aspects (e.g., graphical and product design) as well as technical aspects (e.g., machine learning), and all other aspects in-between such as using psychological models/theories to understand human behaviors. By maintaining such a broad perspective, the HCI Lab can seamlessly connect with interested students from a variety of educational backgrounds.

To facilitate the research, the lab is equipped with tools that can help to gain deeper user insights (e.g., eye-tracking, EEG) and to create innovative solutions (e.g., 3D printing, VR and AR). Although the HCI Lab can operate in different areas, the main areas of interest are those that can have an impact on society, such as health and environmental issues.

The HCI Lab has close connections with many international researchers that are at the top of their field in different areas of HCI. With regularly receiving guest researchers and lecturers, the HCI Lab stays up-to-date with the state-of-the-art research knowledge. A small selection of research environments that the HCI Lab has collaborated with are:

  • Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan)
  • Johannes Kepler University Linz (Linz, Austria)
  • Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Bozen-Bolzano, Italy)
  • New Jersey Institute of Technology (New Jersey, USA)
  • Maastricht University (Maastricht, Netherlands)
  • University College London (London, UK)
  • Kasetsart University (Bangkok, Thailand)

The lab is situated within the School of Engineering in room E2430.
