JYSK Distributions center in Nässjö has a high level of automation. It has three high bays with a total storage capacity of 130 000 load carriers. The items are stored in the high bays at several different height locations and it's important that the items are packed in the right height to ensure a level of high filling degree.
We call one of our load carrier types that is used for storing items a platform. To support the items that are placed on the platform, a pipe of metal (also called safety stick) in two different pipe diameters is mounted on the platform.
The process is that the safety stick shall be removed from the platform after the items are picked at the picking station, if the rest of the load are sufficiently secured on the platform.
The picker can't reach the safety stick from the picking station, so it's impossible to remove the safety sticks for the picker. This causes a lower filling degree with approximately 30% in the high bays for every platform that is stored at the wrong height wrong, as the platform is restored at a too high height location.
Construct a tool that enables the picker to remove the safety sticks from the platform. The tool needs to be in the right length to reach the mount from the picking station, and should also be economic friendly to use, it should be able to handle different pipe diameters and, it should also generate enough momentum to loosen the sticks from its mount.
