Maries research involves the two areas: 1. functional ability in the ageing process and; 2. care of older people. These topics are however not separated from each other but closely linked together. Function in daily life is one of the most important factor related to need and use of care and social services among older persons. There are also many differences between men and women, which are also highlighted in Maries research. Her research also includes the term and condition “frailty” which is also closely related to both functional ability and need and use of care. In her dissertation she found that it was foremost the perceived resources of health, social network and function that were related to the outcome: use of care and social services among the oldest old, and not the more objective resources.
