<p><strong>Welcome to attend Johannes Schmidt’s trial lecture for appointment as associate professor! </strong></p><p><strong>Title:</strong></p><p><em>Non-monotonic reasoning, upper and lower bounds</em></p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p><p>Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms are particularly suitable for applications in a world that is affected by constant change, as is the case in many applications in artificial intelligence (AI). In this lecture I will introduce non-monotonic reasoning and describe previous and current research efforts that try to construct faster, more efficient algorithms (upper bounds), and at the same time determine how close to optimal the newly developed algorithms are (lower bounds). Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms have numerous application areas, e.g., scientific discovery, network security, logic programming, computational biology, medical diagnosis, knowledge base updates, explainability in machine learning, decision support. Current research lies the basis to develop faster solvers for non-monotonic reasoning, to be applicable in any of the aforementioned areas.</p>

Services such as Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon have become indispensable in our lives. They continuously analyze our behavioral patterns to estimate our future behaviors, preferences, and needs. She has a great interest in human rights, especially with a focus on women and children. She recently came back from an internship in India through the organization The Swallows India Bangladesh. She has worked closely with a right-based organization, focusing on defending the rights of Dalits, also referred to as “the untouchables”.</p><p>Her presentation will focus on Caste discrimination by sharing experiences from the tragic but true reality of their everyday life. She will share stories from meetings with people who lost their loved ones in the name of honor.
