Professor Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta guest editor of a reputable journal

Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta, professor of pedagogy with an interdisciplinary background at the School of Education and Communication, Jönköping University, is guest editor for the new double issue of the prestigious international research journal Bandung: Journal of the Global South.

The entire issue has its background in the long-term interdisciplinary work that has been built up since the 1990s in the research environment CCD, Communication, Culture and Diversity, which has been at the School of Education and Communication since 2016. The double issue consists of twelve articles and an introduction on the theme of Languaging, Diversity and Democracy. Contemporary issues of participation and ways-of-being. The theme is based on the international MuDD conference (Multilingualism, Diversity and Democracy) organized by CCD at Jönköping University with the support of the Swedish Research Council in the spring of 2019. The entire issue is published, thanks to CCD resources, as open access, which means that it is available digitally and free for all.

About forty researchers from all continents of the world have contributed as authors and reviewers to this double issue. In addition to CCD researchers from Jönköping University - Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta, Ylva Lindberg and Maria Bäcke who contributed articles - the topic has been addressed by another fifteen senior and junior researchers from north-south and east-west. The studies contribute in various ways to questions about learning and communication in the humanities, social sciences, and educational sciences.

“The work with this dual issue has taken almost three years. In today's publication and publishing crisis, it is important to stop and ask ourselves why we publish, if and in what way we include - and exclude - different perspectives in different research areas. In what way we include - and exclude - colleagues from different parts of the world, who or what has the power to do this, and more,” says Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta.

“In addition to these types of uncomfortable questions that we have to start asking, regardless of which research areas we are active in, I reflect on the hegemony of language in today's digital existence in the introduction of the issue. Which languages we choose to speak in, in our own publications. Which simple - or multiple - perspectives we allow to define - or enrich - us, are important for questions about Languaging, Diversity and Democracy. It is these types of critical questions that constitute Contemporary issues of participation and ways-of-being,” Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta continues.
